Additives for Flavour
Additives for Flavour
While the first beers that might come to mind when the words “flavourings” and “additives” are spoken might be modern Milkshake IPAs and fruity Sour beers, there are traditional beer stylers that have been using flavour additives for centuries. Witbier loves coriander seeds and orange peel, for example. Coffee stouts get a lot of their flavour from rich, darkly-roasted malt, but they can also be boosted by coffee beans and other additives such as charred oak to add depth and smokiness.
It’s not just beers that benefit from additives for flavour. Home distilling with grains of paradise, juniper and other botanicals can create delicious gins and jenevers, and adding fruit, peppercorns, and even rose petals to spirits or mead can have beautiful and unique results.
