Hawthorn: Crataegus monogyna/Crataegus laevigata/Crataegus sp.
Hawthorn
is a flowering shrub in the rose family. Common species include
Crataegus monogyna, Crataegus laevigata, and Crataegus oxyacantha.
The
Hawthorn leaves, berries, and flowers are used as medicine. They
contain chemicals called flavonoids, which have antioxidant effects.
Hawthorn also improves blood circulation and affects blood flow from the
heart.
People most commonly use Hawthorn for chest pain, heart
failure, blood circulation problems, high blood pressure, anxiety, and
many other conditions. Still, there is no good scientific evidence to
support these uses.
- Fruity, floral, pleasantly sweet and tart
- Natural source of nutrients, which is highest in the whole berry

- Hawthorn berry gives the gin a nutty, almost “apply” taste.
Hawthorn is a wild fruit tree that grows in various parts of the world, including Europe, North America, and North Africa.
The botanical name of the genus is Crataegus. It belongs to the Rosaceae family of plants. Although there are hundreds of species of Crataegus, when people refer to the common Hawthorn, they typically mean Crataegus monogyna.
Hawthorn is a thorny plant that produces berry-like fruits. Some people refer to these as “haws.” Haws are not technically berries, as they contain stones, similar to plums.
For centuries, people have used hawthorn berries, leaves, and flowers for traditional herbal remedies. Hawthorn has herbal properties that may have potential health benefits, and scientists have studied the plant’s effectiveness in treating various conditions.
Hawthorn, also known as the May tree, is the only British plant named after the month it blooms. The humble hawthorn berry enjoys a long and enduring history as the herb to strengthen your heart. The hawthorn berry gives the gin a nutty, almost “apply” taste.
Hawthorn berries are stewed, jellied, or used to flavour traditional spirits. Rarely used in gins today, they were likely once far more common in European distilling. Like many of the things which were common in those early spirits, Hawthorns grew all across Europe. There are specimens in the UK which are older than (nearly 800 years old) and one in France that may date back to a time before Europeans even knew of distillation (a rumoured 3rd-century planting in Saint Mars sur la Futaie, Mayenne, France).
