What are Cryo Hops?

The demand for hops with intense aromas and flavours has grown, and the development of super-concentrated Cryo Hops came about to give brewers the powerful punch they wanted.

Cryo Hops is actually a registered trademark, a specific brand name given to this type of enhanced hop by its maker, Yakima Chief. Similar enhanced hop pellets made using the same techniques are LUPOMAX by John I. Haas, and Lupulin Pellets by Hopsteiner.

Yakima Chief were the first hop producers to use the term “cryo hop”, referring to the super-cold hop cones that are quick-frozen using liquid nitrogen and then shattered in order to retrieve as much lupulin as possible. This technique also ensures as little green vegetable matter from the cone is accidentally included too.

This all results in enhanced hop pellets with incredibly high levels of hop lupulin and very little filler, if any. These types of pellets are more expensive, but they pack a huge punch compared to T45 and T90 pellets.
