Elderflowers - 1KG
The Elderflower is from the flowering elderberry plant (Sambucas) and, though often thought of as quintessentially English, is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere. It is used in cooking and to produce soft drinks such as Elderflower cordial and added to alcoholic beverages such as Sambuca. Elderflower adds delicately sweet floral notes to gin.
Some have referred to Elderflower as "the catsup of flavours". This is because Elderflowers seemingly can be used to make anything taste good.
Elderflower has boomed in gin. Owing to the popularity of Elderflower cordials and St. Germain Liqueur, distillers have begun imbuing their gins with the distinctive floral aroma right from the outset. The flavour is slightly honey/vanilla/jasmine/pear and entirely unlike any other flavour. Widespread in central Europe since Roman times, it's become increasingly common in gin, cordials and tonic waters.
Elderflower, compared to Elderberries, has a more floral and lighter taste. In gin, it is more apparent on the nose. Still, they also serve as a useful floral botanical to add soft freshness to a gin, as opposed to using flowers like rose or honeysuckle, which can sometimes veer into more perfumed territory.
