Microbrewery Finings
Microbrewery Finings
There are some beers that just look better when they’re pin-bright. Since the American craft beer revolution, many of us enjoy making and drinking hazy beers—and we understand that it can be just as difficult to keep that hazy look and texture in your beer. Flocculation is hard!
Bright, clear beer is still an important part of any homebrewer’s repertoire though. Dropping out the haze from your English pale ale or Pilsner to get that gorgeous clarity is satisfying as hell.
Get Er Brewed has a range of high-impact fining products to make sure your beer ends up as clear as you’d like it, improving conditioning times and shelf-life as a little extra bonus.
Currently, our top fining products available to homebrewers and microbreweries in small pack and bulk are:
Protafloc
We sell Protafloc in granular and capsule form. Protafloc is a processed form of Carrageenan, used as a kettle fining. It works by binding to proteins within the beer—your hazy particles left at the end of the brewing process—and then enables them to be “dropped out” of the suspension and removed. It works on both particulate and suspended proteins.
Carrageenan is derived from seaweed. Unlike some finings, Protafloc is vegan and plant-based.
Kettle finings are available in granule or tablet format. We also offer liquid and powdered isinglass to treat brewery-conditioned beers. Auxillary finings can be added at several points during the brewing process or, indeed, to support other finings to remove proteins and increase conditioning times, speed up processing, and increase shelf life.
Alginex
Alginex comes in liquid form, and produced by our trusted supplier Murphy & Son. It works best as an “auxiliary” fining product—we recommend that an isinglass or vegan substitute is used in conjunction with Alginex for best results.
Alginex improves the effectiveness of filtering by forcing proteins to bind with it, making the particles larger and therefore enabling them to be more easily filtered out and separated from the liquid. It can be added just before the wort finishes fermentation and is heading to be chilled, or when racking.
Magicol
Murphy & Son’s Magicol is a super-concentrated form of Isinglass, a non-vegan fining traditionally used in the brewing industry. A gelatin-like collagen substance, it is extremely effective at clarifying beer, and is used by many traditional breweries, especially in the UK.
Magicol works by attracting yeast particles within the suspension, causing them to settle out of the beer faster and leave it clear.
Magicol 250 requires dilution before use.
Super F
Super F, manufactured by Murphy & Son, is a fining that can be used in the tank during the conditioning process. It’s a silica-based solution, making it totally vegan. It is very effective at clarifying beer over a 42 hour period, binding to yeast and haze particulates and even smaller particles left by dry hopping.
This fining additive is useful for brewers with small kits because it is quick-acting, giving you your kit back, faster.
