What is Base Malt?
Base malt is used to make wort, the sugar-rich liquid that will become beer once yeast is added and converts the sugars into alcohol.
Base malts are used as the foundational building blocks in any beer, and make-up the vast majority of the malt bill in any given beer recipe. This is because base malt is kilned slowly, at a lower temperature, to keep it light in colour and flavour.
Types of Base Malt
Lots of varieties of malt are used as Base Malt all over the world. Here are some more famous types of malt that can be used as a base to make great tasting beer:
- Pilsner Malt
- Vienna Malt
- Pale Malt
- Lager Malt
Do I have to use other malts?
High quality base malt is flavourful enough to use on its own, depending on the type of beer you want to brew. There are beer styles that only use one type of malt in their recipe, for example a Pilsner may only use Pilsner malt, and an English Pale Ale might only include Pale Malt.
The beauty of brewing, whether you are homebrewing or running your own microbrewery, is in the freedom of choice. Your beer can be brewed exactly as you want it to be, so if you’d like to try brewing a beer with only base malt, do it! Many brewers have successfully done it before.
