Making sure your yeast is in top condition is an important part of the brewing process, and great nutrition enables you to keep things moving and avoid any off flavours or aromas that can come from a stalled brew.

What is Yeast Nutrition?

Brewers use yeast nutrition to make sure their yeast has the best possible start in life. It’s used before pitching, by mixing the nutrition and the yeast together and allowing it to activate before the pitching process begins.

Yeast nutrition is usually formed of nitrogen, which is a vitally important nutrient required by yeast in order for it to function. It can also include any of the following vitamins: folic acid,

thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, niacin, inositol, and biotin.

Yeast also needs the minerals phosphate (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) which are present in wort but some can be in low amounts — particularly zinc.

All of these ingredients are included in yeast nutrition to give brewers’ yeast the boost it needs, whether you’re making mead, beer, wine, or cider.
